Margaretta Elizabeth Lammot was a daughter of Daniel Lammot (1782-1877) and Susan Parham Beck Lammot (1786-1817) of Philadelphia. In 1824, she married Alfred Victor du Pont, a son of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont and Sophie Madeleine Dalmas du Pont. Alfred V. du Pont joined the family firm of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company in 1818 and eventually became senior partner. He resigned from the firm in 1850. Louisa Gerhard was a daughter of William Gerhard (1774-1848) and Sarah Wood Gerhard (1781-1851) of Philadelphia. In 1837, she married Henry du Pont (1812-1889), a son of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont, the founder of the family gunpowder firm. Henry du Pont was a graduate of West Point and served in the military until 1843, when he resigned and joined the family business. He was senior partner from 1850 until his death.
